Meredith Valin was having a very bad week. She had been following the horror online, then on television once most of the internet connections started failing. She stayed in her home when everyone else had fled, mainly because she hadn’t wanted to be alone out there. In her line of work, true friends were scarce. Meredith was a medium, and she had always been good at connecting with the other side. Not like most of those shows would have people believe, no. She didn’t moan and sway or channel their voice; that was mostly fake. Instead, Meredith could actually hear and see the ghosts of the departed. It didn’t happen very often, until this nightmare started. She started seeing spirits of the military men two days ago, fleeing from the south, and knew that the television wasn’t telling everyone the worst of it. Since then, she had taken to walking around with an old baseball bat, in case of looters. She was in the kitchen when the newscaster said that Canada had fallen, and she rushed out to hear if they said anything else. Her heart beat against her ribs and her breath caught in her throat when she saw spirits in her own living room. She screamed, and one of them backed away as if she could hurt them.

“Wait, I won’t hurt you. You startled me, is all.” She walked into the room and saw that there were three of them: a man, a young girl, and a little boy. “Where are you from, and what are you doing here?” she asked, more intrigued than frightened now.

The man spoke for them. “I’m Aleksandr, this is Alana, and the young one is Jabari. We are just stopping in on our way to New England. How is it you can see us?” He smiled, then added, “Not very many people have ever seen me.”

“I’m a medium. I’ve always been able to perceive the people that have crossed over to the other side.” She had never talked like this to the departed before. They were usually despondent and gloomy, shuffling off to wherever spirits went. Except the angry ones, those never talked either, but were anything but despondent. “Why New England?”

The spirit woman, Alana, moved closer and smiled. “I’m from there. I’m trying to get home to see if my parents made it home safe. We were on vacation in Africa when it started, and they may have gotten out on the early flights.”

“We’re going to see snow!” Jabari exclaimed, bouncing in excitement.

“Maybe, Jabari, maybe. It’s a little early for that right now, but in a couple months it may snow where we’re going.”

“What part of New England?” Meredith asked. These three might not be the kind of company she had been hoping for, but if she went with them, she technically wouldn’t be alone.

“I’m from New Hampshire, a little town called Goffstown.”

“May I go with you? I wouldn’t be much trouble,” Meredith asked. Alana looked at Aleksandr, then turned and smiled at Meredith.
